Warrendale is one of the most searched place names north of Pittsburgh, and it is not a town. It has no borough council, no tax office, and no school district of its own. Warrendale is an unincorporated community inside Marshall Township in Allegheny County, with its own ZIP code, 15086, and a name most people know from the I-79 exit sign.
If you have seen a Warrendale address on a listing, or you are trying to figure out where Warrendale ends and Wexford or Cranberry begins, here is what the address actually means.

Where Warrendale is
Warrendale sits in the northwestern corner of Allegheny County, inside Marshall Township. Cranberry Township and the Butler County line are directly north. The Warrendale exit on I-79 is in Marshall Township, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange is just over the line in Cranberry.
The community was founded as Brush Creek and renamed Warrendale in 1907 for the Warren family, who lived in the area in the late 1700s.
Why the name is everywhere
Most of the Warrendale name recognition comes from business, not housing. Warrendale is home to the corporate headquarters of SAE International, Joy Mining Machinery, and Printing Industries of America, and to the United States Postal Service Pittsburgh Network Distribution Center, one of 21 such hubs in the country. Marshall Township has hosted a large research and business park since the late 1960s.
That is why the 15086 ZIP code covers only about 1.9 square miles and 684 residents at the 2020 census, with roughly 380 housing units. A Warrendale address is far more likely to belong to an office than a house.
Warrendale, Wexford, and Cranberry: what your address really tells you
Marshall Township uses several mailing addresses, including Warrendale 15086 and Wexford 15090. Wexford is its own puzzle: it is a mailing address split across Marshall, Pine, McCandless, and Franklin Park. Cranberry Township, right across the county line, is a separate municipality in Butler County.
Three homes a few minutes apart can carry a Warrendale, Wexford, or Cranberry address and land in different townships, counties, school districts, and tax structures. The mailing address does not decide any of that. The parcel does.
Schools and taxes
A home in Warrendale is a home in Marshall Township, and Marshall Township is in North Allegheny School District, along with McCandless, Franklin Park, and Bradford Woods. My North Allegheny School District guide covers the district in detail.
Taxes follow Marshall Township and Allegheny County. If you are weighing a Warrendale or Marshall home against something across the line in Cranberry, the county difference matters, and I compared the two in my Butler County property tax guide.
Living in and around Warrendale
Because Warrendale itself has so few homes, buyers drawn to the area are almost always shopping Marshall Township as a whole. Marshall grew from 6,915 residents in 2010 to 10,080 in 2020, one of the fastest growth rates in the North Hills. Township parks include Knob Hill Community Park, Altmyer Park, and Warrendale Park, and part of State Game Lands No. 203 sits within the township.
I walked through the township, its neighborhoods, and why so many Wexford addresses are really Marshall in my Marshall Township guide. If you are also looking east of Route 19, my new Pine Township guide covers the Pine-Richland side.
If you want to actually look
A search for homes in Warrendale will turn up very little, because there is very little residential housing in the 15086 ZIP code. The better search is Marshall Township, filtered by the parcel rather than the mailing address.
