The North Hills is more of a local umbrella term than a single municipality, and in this context it includes Ross Township, Ohio Township and Ben Avon areas. three of the north suburbs with the easiest access to the city along the I-279 corridor. That location is a huge part of the appeal. For buyers who want to stay closely connected to Pittsburgh without moving all the way into the city, this area offers one of the most convenient home bases in Pittsburgh North. Ross Township is served by North Hills School District, while Ohio Township and Ben Avon are served by Avonworth School District.
Daily life here tends to feel especially "busy" because so much of the region’s shopping and dining is concentrated nearby. The McKnight Road corridor runs through the heart of this area, putting Ross Park Mall, The Block Northway, Mt. Nebo shopping, and a long stretch of major retailers, restaurants, and everyday essentials within easy reach. Ross Park Mall also gives this part of the north suburbs a more elevated retail presence, with a luxury mix that sets it apart from most suburban shopping corridors in the region.
One of the biggest draws here is the variety in housing stock. In Ross Township, you’ll often find older homes with mid-century modern character, while nearby Ben Avon and Ben Avon Heights add another layer of charm with beautiful historic Victorians. Ohio Township, by contrast, tends to offer newer housing stock, giving buyers a different mix of style and setting within the same broader North Hills area. Proximity to Shannopin Country Club adds to the appeal for golfers and homebuyers who enjoy the social side of country club living.
The North Hills has a population of 80,430, with an average age of 46. Home ownwership is 83% with an average home sale price of 0.
