5 Nursery Design Trends for the Modern Home

Having a child is not only a huge life milestone but it is one of life’s greatest joys. Becoming a parent is filled with excitement, and one of the most fun parts is getting to decorate the nursery as you wait for that little one to come along. Just like anything else having to do with home décor, tastes and trends have changed over time. Many parents today are looking to think outside the box and design a stylish, contemporary room. Traditional pastel pink and baby blue, standards in years past, have been replaced in many cases by a wide range of themes and styles- from boho to Mid-Century Modern. If you can’t wait to get started decorating your child’s nursery, you’ll definitely want to consider some of these top trends- there’s something for every taste and budget!

1.    Sophisticated Colors – Perhaps the biggest trend in nursery décor is the notion that a nursery doesn’t need to feel stylistically separate from the rest of your home. The most common example of this is the use of a wider array of colors, often no different than those you would use elsewhere in your home. If you want to capture some of that classic feel, using subtle shades of blue or pink can be more tasteful than an overwhelming bright pastel shade. Neutral earth tones, greys, and even greens are other good choices to consider.

2.    Multi-Purpose Furniture – Making efficient use of space is always a good idea in your home. Even if you aren’t lacking for space, a nursery and its furniture can still offer additional uses. Combination nursery-guestrooms are one such way to get more use out of your space. A daybed or sofa bed can be a great place for guests… or yourself if you need to take a nap after taking care of baby! Convertible cribs can add longevity to your child’s first bed- it could last them years before needing to get a new bed. The same goes for changing tables, desks, and dressers which can find new life as your baby becomes a toddler.

3.    Accent Walls – Another popular way to change the look and feel of a nursery is with accent walls- and it doesn’t take any floor space, which means it’s a great choice for those with a small nursery. Paint, stick-on patterns and textures, and even an exposed brick wall can all add some personality to your room- just like it would anywhere else in your home.

4.    Personalize - When it comes to décor, less can be more. Sometimes the most charming décor is something that has special meaning to you. A simple frame turns a handprint into a masterpiece. Family photos, framed keepsakes, and even greeting cards from friend and family are all wonderful ways to make a nursery feel welcoming to both you and the newest member of your family.

5.    Natural Elements – The past few years have seen natural designs and materials become increasingly popular in home décor. A wicker or rattan table can help add to the sophisticated look of your nursery while also being a functional piece of furniture. Natural cotton and wool are soft touch options that can help dress up a sofa or bed. Trendy can be comfortable!

Baby nurseries are part of the home. Contemporary parents are looking for new ways to decorate that complement, not compete, with the rest of the home. As you eagerly await your little one, have some fun and design a nursery that brings you joy!
